FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Free Contraception FAQs

Who is eligible for free contraception in Ireland?

The free contraception scheme is available to women and people who can become pregnant aged 17-35 who are ordinarily resident in Ireland. You don't need a medical card to qualify - the scheme is based on age only.

What types of contraception are covered for free?

The scheme covers most forms of contraception including the combined pill, mini pill (progestogen-only), contraceptive patch, vaginal ring, emergency contraception (morning after pill), IUDs (copper coil), IUS (hormonal coil), and contraceptive implants. Condoms are not included.

Is the GP consultation also free?

Yes, if you're aged 17-35 and eligible for the scheme, both the GP consultation and the contraception itself are free. GetYourGP is registered to provide consultations under the scheme. If you're outside the eligible age range, the standard consultation fee of €35 applies.

How do I access free contraception through GetYourGP?

Book a video consultation through our app, select contraception as your reason for visit, and confirm you're aged 17-35. During the consultation, our GP will discuss your options and prescribe the most suitable contraception, which you can collect free from any participating pharmacy.

Can I get emergency contraception (morning after pill) for free?

Yes, if you're aged 17-35 and eligible, emergency contraception (the morning after pill) is covered under the free contraception scheme. You can book an urgent consultation with GetYourGP and receive a prescription quickly.

Do I need to register for the free contraception scheme?

No separate registration is required. When you book with GetYourGP and confirm your age and residency, we handle the administrative side. You just need to bring ID showing your date of birth when collecting your prescription.

Can I get my contraception prescription sent to any pharmacy?

Yes, your prescription can be sent to any pharmacy in Ireland that participates in the free contraception scheme (most pharmacies do). Just let us know your preferred pharmacy during your consultation.

What if I'm under 17 or over 35?

If you're outside the 17-35 age range, you can still get contraception through GetYourGP, but the standard consultation fee of €35 applies, plus the cost of the contraception itself. Some contraception may be covered by your medical card or drug payment scheme.
