About Weight Loss Treatment

Prescription weight loss medications can help when diet and exercise alone haven't worked. Our Irish-registered GPs can prescribe medications as part of a comprehensive weight management plan.

Available Treatments

Our GPs can prescribe:

  • Fat-absorption treatment - reduces how much dietary fat your body absorbs
  • Daily GLP-1 injection - supports appetite control
  • Weekly GLP-1 injection - supports appetite control (subject to availability)

Who Qualifies?

You may be suitable for prescription weight loss if:

  • BMI of 30 or above (obese), OR
  • BMI of 27 or above with weight-related health conditions (diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol)

Requirements

To use this service, you need:

  • Recent weight and height measurements
  • Blood pressure reading (within 3 months)
  • Recent blood test (for GLP-1 medications)

What a Weight Assessment Involves

A structured medical assessment with an Irish-registered GP, from booking to follow-up.

1

Book a consultation

Choose an appointment time that suits you. Appointments are available seven days a week, including evenings and weekends. You will see the price before you confirm.

2

Complete the pre-consultation questionnaire

Before the appointment you are asked for your height, weight, waist measurement, medical history, and the medicines and supplements you take. Having this ready means the consultation itself is spent on the discussion rather than on data entry.

3

Talk to an Irish-registered GP

A video consultation covering your weight history, what you have already tried, your eating, activity, sleep and stress patterns, and any symptoms that point to an underlying medical contributor.

4

Baseline checks where they are indicated

The GP will tell you if blood tests, blood pressure readings or other checks are needed. Common reasons include screening for thyroid problems, blood sugar levels and other conditions that affect weight or that weight affects.

5

Agree a plan together

The GP explains what your assessment shows and what the realistic options are. That may cover nutrition and activity changes, treating an underlying condition, referral to another service, or — where it is clinically appropriate and only after assessment — prescription treatment.

6

Review and follow up

Weight management is a course of care rather than a single appointment. Follow-up consultations let the GP check how the plan is working, review any test results, and adjust the approach with you.

Generally BMI 30+ (obese) or BMI 27+ with weight-related health conditions. Enter your height and weight in the questionnaire to check.

Results vary. With medication plus lifestyle changes, most people lose 5-10% of body weight. GLP-1 medications may achieve higher weight loss.

All prescribed medications are HPRA-approved. Side effects vary by medication and will be discussed. They're not suitable for everyone.

For GLP-1 injections, yes - we need recent blood tests. Oral fat-absorption treatment doesn't always require blood tests.
