How statutory sick pay works in 2026

Ireland introduced employer-paid statutory sick leave for the first time under the Sick Leave Act 2022. As of 2026, the entitlement is 5 days per calendar year, paid by your employer at 70% of your normal gross daily pay up to a cap of €110 per day. The Act's planned increases to 7 and 10 days were not commenced — the Government confirmed in 2025 that the entitlement remains at 5 days.

To qualify you need at least 13 weeks of continuous service with your employer, and a medical certificate from a registered medical practitioner covering the absence from day one. If your contract already gives you a sick pay scheme as favourable as the statutory one (or better), the statutory scheme does not apply on top of it.

Statutory sick pay covers days you were scheduled to work. This calculator assumes a Monday–Friday pattern; if you work shifts or weekends, count your own rostered days instead.

Off sick for longer? Illness Benefit

Statutory sick pay is short-term by design. If you are unable to work beyond your statutory days, you may qualify for Illness Benefit from the Department of Social Protection. It is based on your PRSI contributions, is paid from the fourth day of illness, and requires a ‘certificate of incapacity for work’ from a GP.

You need a sick cert from day one

Statutory sick pay requires a medical certificate from the first day of absence — and most employers ask for one anyway. If you are too unwell to sit in a waiting room, an online GP consultation takes minutes and a certificate is issued where clinically appropriate.
