Weight Loss Injections in Ireland

Injectable weight management treatment is prescription-only in Ireland. It starts with an assessment by an Irish-registered GP, who decides whether it is clinically appropriate for you — and may conclude that it is not.

A consultation fee pays for a doctor's assessment and judgement. It does not buy a prescription, and no prescription is guaranteed. Prescription-only medicines can only be supplied after an individual assessment, and an assessment may conclude that no medicine is appropriate for you. If that is not what you are looking for, please do not book.

What injectable weight management treatment is

These are prescription-only medicines taken by self-injection, usually once a week, from a class called GLP-1 receptor agonists. GLP-1 is a hormone your gut releases after eating, and it is part of the system that signals you have eaten enough. Medicines in this class act at the same receptors.

We do not name specific medicines on this page. Irish law does not permit prescription-only medicines to be advertised to the public, and which treatment — if any — suits you is a clinical decision made with a prescriber who knows your history. The HPRA register is the authoritative source for which products are authorised in Ireland and what their approved product information says.

Treatment of this kind works alongside changes to eating, activity and sleep rather than instead of them, and it involves ongoing review rather than a single prescription.

What the assessment covers

  • Your weight history, and what you have already tried
  • Height, weight and waist measurement, interpreted against the right thresholds for your background
  • Your full medical history and every medicine you take
  • Screening for conditions that affect weight, and for anything that changes what is appropriate
  • Blood tests where your history and circumstances indicate them
  • What you actually want from treatment, and what a realistic plan looks like

When this is not the right route

  • You want a prescription without an assessment
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or breastfeeding
  • You are looking for treatment for someone else
  • You need care that requires a physical examination or tests we cannot arrange remotely

What it costs

A consultation is from €35 Monday to Friday between 8am and 5pm, and from €50 in the evenings, at weekends and on bank holidays. That is the price of the assessment, payable whether or not it results in a prescription.

Any medicine is dispensed and charged separately by your pharmacy. Its cost depends on the product and on your eligibility under the Drugs Payment Scheme or a medical card — see our guide to how prescriptions work in Ireland.

Common questions

What are weight loss injections?

They are prescription-only medicines given by self-injection, usually once a week, from a class called GLP-1 receptor agonists. GLP-1 is a hormone the gut releases after eating; these medicines act at the same receptors, which affects appetite signalling and how quickly the stomach empties. They are one part of a wider plan rather than a replacement for one.

Can I get a prescription for weight loss injections online?

Only after an assessment, and only where a GP concludes it is clinically appropriate for you. This is not a purchase and it is not guaranteed. The consultation fee covers the doctor’s assessment and judgement whether or not any prescription results — the same as an in-person GP visit.

Who might injectable weight management treatment suit?

A prescriber considers your weight history and what you have already tried, your BMI and waist measurement interpreted against the right thresholds for your background, your full medical and medicine history, and screening for conditions that affect weight. Some histories rule particular treatments out entirely, which is why the assessment comes first.

What does it cost?

A consultation is €35 Monday to Friday between 8am and 5pm, and €50 in the evenings, at weekends and on bank holidays. That is the cost of the assessment. Any medicine is dispensed and charged by your pharmacy separately, and its price depends on the product and your eligibility for any scheme.

Can I be turned down?

Yes, and it happens. An assessment may conclude that no medicine is appropriate, or that something else needs investigating first, or that in-person care is the right route. A service that guarantees a prescription before a doctor has assessed you is promising something a doctor cannot.

Will I need follow-up?

Yes. Treatment of this kind is not a single prescription. Monitoring, review and follow-up are part of the plan rather than an optional extra, and a prescriber will discuss what that looks like before anything starts.

What about buying online without a prescription?

Do not. Falsified products have been sold as genuine, including pens that contained something else entirely. A prescription-only medicine bought outside the regulated pharmacy supply chain carries no assurance of what is in it, how much, or how it has been stored. The HPRA publishes guidance on identifying a legitimate supply route.
