Common Questions About Repeat Prescriptions

What medications can I get as a repeat prescription?

We can prescribe most regular medications including contraceptive pills, inhalers for asthma/COPD, blood pressure medications, cholesterol medications, thyroid medications, and many others. Controlled substances (like strong painkillers or sleeping tablets) and first-time prescriptions typically require a consultation.

How quickly can I get my repeat prescription?

Most repeat prescription requests are processed within 2 hours during operating hours (8am-10pm, 7 days). Your prescription is then sent electronically to your pharmacy for same-day collection.

Do I need a consultation for a repeat prescription?

Not always. If you have been taking the same medication regularly and your condition is stable, you can request a prescription-only service for €25. If the GP has any concerns or it has been a long time since your last review, they may recommend a consultation (€35).

What if the GP declines my prescription request?

If the GP cannot safely issue your prescription without a consultation, you will be offered a video consultation at no extra charge (you only pay the €35 consultation fee, not the €25 prescription fee). If you decide not to proceed, you will receive a full refund.

Can I choose which pharmacy receives my prescription?

Yes. You can select any pharmacy in Ireland. We have a list of partner pharmacies, but you can also enter details for any other pharmacy. The prescription is sent electronically.

How long is the prescription valid for?

In Ireland, prescriptions are typically valid for 6 months from the date of issue. Your GP will specify the number of repeats if applicable. Some medications may have different validity periods.

Can I get a repeat prescription if I am not registered with a GP?

Yes. You do not need to be registered with GetYourGP or have used our service before. However, for certain medications, the GP may request information about your medical history or recommend a consultation to ensure safe prescribing.

Is the repeat prescription service available on weekends?

Yes. Our GPs are available 7 days a week, 8am to 10pm, including weekends and bank holidays. Repeat prescription requests submitted outside these hours will be processed the next morning.
